CEO of the Alfred Mann Foundation for Scientific Research (AMF)

David L. Hankin is the Chief Executive Officer of the Alfred Mann Foundation for Scientific Research (AMF), a not-for- profit organization founded by healthcare legend Alfred E. Mann in 1985. Reporting to AMF’s Board of  Directors, Hankin has P&L responsibility and is charged with setting the overall vision for AMF. Prior to this 2007 appointment, Mr. Hankin served as AMF’s General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer. AMF is a unique no-for- profit organization that seeks to develop and commercialize medical products to address unmet and/or poorly met medical needs. Under Hankin’s leadership, AMF has expanded its R&D footprint, undertaking several major and minor developments, including a system to reanimate paralyzed limbs, drug delivery systems, control systems for advanced prosthetic devices and devices to treat chronic pain. In recent years, AMF has founded three new for-profit start up companies that are commercializing AMF technologies. During the first five years as CEO, Hankin spent considerable time in Washington DC, establishing relationships on Capitol Hill, inside the Executive Branch and with the Department of Defense to advance AMF’s interests. AMF successfully secured an allocation of radio frequency spectrum for a wireless system enabling device system that was among the first that could successfully share a radio frequency on a non-harmful interference basis with radars and other defense installations.

Mr. Hankin is responsible for managing AMF’s endowment, working closely with Wall Street investment Banks and hedge funds. Mr. Hankin also serves as President of the Alfred Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering  and the Mann Medical Research Organization. He serves as Chairman of the Board of Bioness, Inc., a for-profit company dedicated to bringing leading edge technology to the rehabilitation market. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of AMI Technion in Haifa, Israel, established by Alfred Mann and the Technion to develop solutions to unmet medical needs. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Directors of several other organizations.

Prior to AMF, Mr. Hankin served as Chief Executive Officer of a small technology start up company held by the Hyundai family and he held senior executive positions at Sony. Prior to this, Mr. Hankin built a successful legal practice, specializing in the intellectual property transactions.

Mr. Hankin earned his Juris Doctorate at Vanderbilt University School of Law in Nashville, Tennessee as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
